Zagorka stands in high esteem and respect of Bulgarian beer connoisseurs. And even more – it is a source of national pride.

History of the brand

At the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century, a period in history when beer started to become an increasingly popular drink, the Zagorka Brewery was established. At this time a lot of Bulgarians had the chance to travel abroad and become educated in prestigious European universities. From Western Europe they brought many new trends, including the love for lager beer, hence why many of the largest Bulgarian breweries were established in that period.

One of the oldest and most respected amongst those was Zagorka, founded in 1902. The official founder of the brewery was Doctor Kozuharov. He graduated at the Prague Medical School and during his studies he had quite a lot of time to taste and enjoy the Czech brews. When he came back to Stara Zagora he managed to stir his enthusiasm into some of his prestigious friends and to convince them of his grand idea – that a brewery must be built! In 1902 the citizens of Stara Zagora were happy – now they could enjoy their own brewery, which everybody called with love “The Beer House”.

A lot of Bulgarian and international medals and awards have been won, including the highest in the world quality selection, Monde Selection.

Today, more than a century after its foundation, Zagorka is a leading Bulgarian beer brand. More than any other brand it symbolises long standing tradition, experience and rich history of excellent and constant quality.

A piece of Zagorka's History can be seen in its labelling over the times
